Centenary Gala Concert

12th July 2013

Celebrating 100 entertaining  years of the Villa Marina

For one hundred years, the Villa Marina has played an important role in the lives of island residents and visitors. The venue, with it’s magnificent Royal Hall and glorious gardens, is etched in the memories of thousands who have enjoyed top class entertainment provided by a galaxy of international stars, competed in the ‘Guild’, or fallen in love on the dance floor. And new memories are still being created today.

The Grand opening of the Villa Marina Kursaal by his Excellency the Lieutenant Governor, Lord Raglan and his wife took place in July, 1913 and was a day for the whole Island.

One work in the programme, J E Quayle's 'The Magic Isle', had not been performed here for over 60 years.

The composer was a well-known violinist, conductor of the Douglas Amateur Orchestral Society in the 1920s, Master of the Rolls and an accomplished composer, who made a huge contribution to the musical life of our Island.  It has been an exciting project resurrecting this fine, evocative symphonic portrait of the Isle of Man.

The idea for this concert was to perform a programme to include the many different styles of music which have been heard in the Villa’s 100 years of entertaining the public. The orchestra played pieces by Johann Strauss, Coleridge -Taylor, Haydn Wood, Tchaikovsky and many more.

The Compere for the evening was Charles Guard who expertly led us through the century.

In order to cover all the styles, we invited guest artistes to join us. The swing era was represented by Castle Rushen High School’s Big Band, directed by John Kinley. We were  delighted to welcome Illiam Quane (current Young Musician of Mann) as trumpet soloist.

Also joining us for the concert vocal soloists Karen Elliott, Kristene Sutcliffe, Mandy Griffin, Ernest Thorne and Graham Crowe within which is  a quartet of Cleveland medal winners who represent the big part that the Manx Music Festival has played in the Villa’s long history.
