Our Gala Concert of 2016 was one we had eagerly looked forward to and one we can now savour as a highlight and landmark in the orchestra’s history. We were delighted and privileged to be joined by Tasmin Little as our eminent guest soloist.

Her performance of Haydyn Wood’s Violin Concerto was captivating. During the second, slow movement the atmosphere was magical.

This was the first time Haydn Wood’s violin Concerto had been played on the island in it’s entirety.  The only other previously known performance was of just the second and third movements, with the Spanish virtuoso Antonio Brosa, with Harry Wood’s Palace Orchestra under the baton of Haydn Wood himself, at the

Palace Coliseum in 1933.

The programme was opened with Humperdinck's wonderfully lyrical and sumptuously scored overture to his opera ‘Hansel and Gretel’, perfect for the weeks

before Christmas.

Leaving the crowning glory of the evening Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony. ‘Fate', in the shape of a sinister ‘motto’ theme that appears in various guises in every movement, haunts this rich and exciting score. And as predicted by Maurice the final few minutes ‘brought the house down’.
